Joining our band is an exciting opportunity that is open to all musicians at the University of British Columba! Whether you’re used to high school bands and orchestras, private lessons, or garage jam sessions, Chicago will provide a new experience that is both challenging and extremely rewarding.

Throughout the rehearsal process, band members get to know their tight-knit group of fellow musicians and develop their musical ability in a fun, supportive environment. They then go on to combine their talents with the cast and crew to put on a great production.

Rehearsals will be held weekly Tuesday, 6:00 – 9:00 PM and Saturdays, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM on UBC campus. Rehearsals begin Tuesday, January 14 and lead up to the performances on March 21st – 22nd. These rehearsal times may be subject to slight changes, but it is expected that members attend all rehearsals which should not exceed a total of 6- 8 hours / week.

CHICAGO the Musical:

In roaring twenties Chicago, chorine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap – until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another merry murderess, Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune, and acquittal.

Instruments for Chicago:

Chicago features a smooth jazz score with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. We’re looking for enthusiastic musicians to fill the following instruments:

  • Piano 1 & 2
    Trumpet 1 & 2

Participation Fee:

If accepted, band members are asked to pay a $15 participation fee. This is a small fee to help support the production, as we perform in a professional venue and aim to create high-quality productions. Band members will also receive a production shirt as part of this cost. If you are selected but have difficulty paying this fee, please email or speak with a club executive team member.

Applying for CHICHAGO:

  1. Complete this application form* by Friday, January 10 at 10:00 PM.
  2. Schedule a fifteen-minute informal audition *with our band director, Heidi Collie, on Sunday, January 12 from 12:00 – 6:00 PM.
  3. Successful applicants will receive an email by Sunday, January 12 at 8:00 PM.

*Audition and application forms will open on December 30th.

Audition preparation:

For your audition you will be expected to prepare an excerpt from Chicago based on your instrument of choice, see provided options below. Learn this to the best of your ability, and, if possible at the correct tempo (refer to soundtrack). We have chosen some of the most challenging sections for this part of the audition, so don’t be afraid of making mistakes. If you have difficulty preparing the audition piece due to lack of access to an instrument, please let us know!

You will also be asked to do some sight-reading and/or any additional musical exercises selected by our band director. We’re not looking for perfection, this informal audition will be to gauge your ability and comfort with your instrument. We look forward to getting to know you better as both a musician and an individual.

Thank you for your interest in the band! We are very excited about the upcoming year and can’t wait to welcome you into our band. For any band-specific inquiries, please email Heidi at
